So im here because im one of the idiots that did the Ancestry DNA test. With that said,im hoping to legitimately learn Icelandic fluently on my quest to understand Old Norse. Any advice wouod be greatly appreciated

I think people need to realize, literally is not a closed practice what so ever. It’s in people’s blood as well as a calling. Someone with this in their blood may not give two sh*ts about the cultures and religions and beliefs but someone who has no ties or connection most certainly can! Especially if they were called to it. Its not up to you to decide wether or not someone practices any of this it’s up to the gods to determine if your worthy of their gifts. Also keep in mind don’t tattoo a symbol on to your body especially symbols that are hundreds of years old. Don’t be the one to tattoo a binding rune and wonder why your life sucks .

lol we have what I call "wake up shipping" in the US. There are times where I will order something before sleeping and the next morning it is just sitting outside of my door. It's not a compelling advantage to living here but logistic capacity in the US is insane. We have a lot of space for huge warehouses and a low entry wage. However in 2023 - 2024 most American households earning less than 100,000 USD / Year are very strained. It is getting very difficult to save and purchase essentials. Taxes and insurance are way up. Most Americans end up spending a huge portion of their income just protecting what little we have.

Here in the US the police have guns and if you're at all combative you have roughly a 50% chance of getting the life beat out of you and getting thrown into a holding cell. Also. Carpet is awful.

Given that the population is so small everyone has probably traded body fluids with each other I wander if DNA tests are mandatory to make sure your not inbreeding or to find out if the child your wife is having is even yours or your brothers maybe even your dad’s child. Women from Iceland probably won’t make a very loyal wife given that having sex with someone you just met is used as an ice breaker you would have to worry about her having sex with the male neighbour every time one move in.

In deffence of people in other countries, they are going to pronounce foreign names and terms differently. It's because they're speaking from a different language/accent. My last name is German but because I'm Australian I pronounce it differently to how they would in Germany. 😉

You think Americans are bad....I'm Australian and didn't learn what Scandinavia meant until I was in my mid twenties! Our education is really bad and no one knows this stuff. As for pronunciations....same problem.

I've been to Bryggjan Brugghús in Reykjavik last tuesday. The food was very good.

I recently stayed at a budget room, no fridge in the room, but outside is fridge :D Bought food (stuff like; hrokkbrauð (rock bread), Icelandic Gouda, dried fish, etc) from Kronan, and just took it with me on the hikes! For anyone wanting to have a drink while in Reykjavik - either seek out the establishments that offer happy hours (usually run from 12pm to 5/7pm) - or, I'd recommend buying alcohol, duty free, from your country, and bringing it with you - buy mixers from Bonus/Kronan - Remember to check online for Icelandic airport import customs, on what you can bring into the country, free of charge. Also, another useful fact - most (if not all) supermarkets will show their opening hours outside - I.e. You might see 8-20 written by their supermarket sign - thats their opening hours, in 24-hour format. Some stores open later than you think, such as 10am!

Hi, I live in a place that is the opposite of Iceland. The weather is very hot, and what is common to the history you talked about is that we live in a small place that, unfortunately, is surrounded by enemies and wars that get worse every time. And the gods that each have a symbol. This is how I manage to give room for imagination instead of fear through the stories of heroism, etc.

If you do it with respect and knowledge, that’s cultural appreciation.

Fun fact; pronunciation of this names vary greatly between Scandinavian countries. Icelandic, if anything, seems to be closer to the old norse than other modern nordic languages... but is not the [only] correct way.

Sweden has a term for having slept with the same person too. Despite having a larger population it happens, especially with people moving in the same circles. The terms are: Male: ”Buksvåger” ( a bit like ”stomach brother i law”. ). Female: ”Buksvägerska” ( ”stomach sister in law ) There is also the female ”Buksyster”. ( stomach sister” ) Or a unisex ”Buksyskon”. ( ”stomach siblings” ) in plural. Our dating is ( no surprise ) rather similar. I think i slept with most of my ex’es before we started dating.

Tbf, Icelandic pronunciation has significantly changed from old norse. For example, word final r was more like a french j, and a lot of names now written with ö in icelandic were pronounced like the o in often in old norse

2:35 the icelandic language is the closest language to what the stories would be told in originally in scandinavia so thats true about how the icelandic pronunciations are the ones that should be used. ive heard some people that study old norse say that people that can read icelandic can read old norse even though its difficult for them. like modern english compared to shakespeare english

"Hi how are you" is kind of like saying good day to people, most people just respond with "good” even if they are feeling upset.

I can understand these better than scandinavians and I'm finnish. I remember back in 90's when I had a swedish bf from Stockholm he couldn't understand danish so I translated danish newspapers to him in english 🤣 maybe some minor differencies in between of scandinavian languages make native speakers blind something that is obvious.

Don't worry about being mom-ish! Those were very important crucial points, especially from a local perspective for tourists!
